Shrubs - Shrubs are the workhorses of low-maintenance, waterwise gardens. Flowering shrubs provide seasonal color and year-round interest. Some of the most popular are blue hibiscus (Alyogyne), Callistemon, Ceanothus, pineapple guava, Cistus, pride of Madeira, Nandina, Pittosporu(there are many varieties), pomegranate, Pyracantha and Rhaphiolepis. Aloe and yucca can be added to the waterwise shrub category. For waterwise privacy hedges, whether formally trimmed or not, use purple hopseed bush, Osmanthus, Carolina laurel cherry or Xylosma.
Grow them as shrubs or small trees that grow up to 15 feet. Most bottlebrush varieties bloom over a long summer season in shades of red or crimson.. Once established they are drought tolerant. Can be grown in pots or in ground.
California Lilacs, or Ceanothus, are some of the most fragrant and colorful shrubs in California. They are also evergreen and very drought tolerant.
This drought tolerant California native plant hates drip irrigation, summer water (except first year), and soil amendments. They are very long lived.
Nandina or heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica) is an evergreen or semi-evergreen broadleaf shrub, which is tough and durable. It grows 5 to 7 feet high and spreads 3 to 5 feet. Nandina prefers moist, fertile soil, protected from harsh winds. It can be planted in partial shade to full sun.
Bushy, rounded, evergreen shrub with wavy edged dark green leaves. White flowers with a yellow blotch in Summer. Ideal for coastal sites. Require dry site with full sun.
Rhaphiolepis indica, commonly known as India hawthorn, is a dense, broad-leaved evergreen shrub that typically grows to 4-6†tall and as wide.
Winter hardy to USDA Zones 8-10 where this shrub is easily grown in moist, well-drained soils in full sun. Best flowering and best resistance to leaf spot disease occur in locations with full sun.
Commonly known as the rose of Sharon or rose mallow Blue Hibiscus is a deciduous flowering shrub with many cultivars. The hardy, low-maintenance nature of the hibiscus makes it an excellent choice for urban growers. It prefers full sunlight, though it tolerates partial shade or dappled sun
